Symbols in Art -- A Visual Glossary
The following "visual glossary" is designed for those people who want to
explore and understand the symbolism pervading my artistic creations. It is intended to help you navigate your way through an array of topics that are peculiar to my Metaphysical Surrealist experience.
This glossary combines several modes of interpretation of an objective reality, and by showing
you the function of colours, how animate and inanimate objects are used and placed in the composition of a work of art, I hope that you will recognize that there is a symbolic element in all art. Such a recognition will be helpful when visiting art
exhibitions and museums.
Consequently, this glossary should be used only for
instructional pleasure. It should assist you in the process of cultivating your own psyche and forming your own opinion about symbolism in the arts. Remember that you are the viewer and the ultimate interpreter of the technique, the subject matter, the
composition, and the coloristic effect of a painting. It is my belief that, by now, you have realized that a mirror reflects only what is in front of it. Therefore, your interpretation is subject to your cultural background. Keep on reading poetry, short
stories, novels, plays, mythology, history and whatever fancies your curiosity and by doing so you will enrich not only your mind but you will acquire the basic knowledge and skills to enable you to communicate your ideas clearly and effectively on any
other subject besides art.
