Solitude and Greatness
Solitude and Greatness
Oil on canvas, 1962 75cm x 60cm (30" x 24")

Artist's Interpretation:

Every man is alone on this earth. This is true especially for the creative mind. It is in himself that he searches for reality, for the world without is merely a reflection of the world within. Leaning against the ruins of the Past (column) he seeks solitude to find inspiration. From the quay of his imagination he will start his journey towards the shores of Arts, Sciences and Letters. In his dreamy world even the shadow has its own life. Rationality becomes irrational (objects and their shadows follow a perspective of their own, they are independent of each other). He searches for the higher realm of consciousness (birds) and ponders on the poetry of Time (fleeting "aristocratic" clouds). His quest will know no end and his new found wisdom will quench his fellowmen's thirst for knowledge (aqueduct).
