The Persistence of Time
The Persistence of Time
Oil on canvas, 1963 90cm x 60cm (36" x 24")

Artist's Interpretation:

My time, your time is limited (walls), but time itself is unlimited (no ceiling). The construction is old, almost timeless; an oriental motif opens the third wall onto a sunset which signals the inevitable end of the day, each dying day giving birth to a new dawn. Life fluctuates between "spiritualism" (cross on the left) and "materialism" (hammer on the right). During our brief sojourn on the earth (globe) we can either laugh or cry (masks hanging on the left wall), but at the end of our days we will have the same motionless and cold expression (mask on the floor - lower right). As Time regenerates itself with each dawn so does mankind through the mystery of procreation (silhouette of the woman on the right wall). The globe is positioned to present North America (where the painting was created) while a suspended rod (left, facing the cross) repeats with its shadow the agony of the human soul in search of its destiny, a search that reverberates across the walls before embarking Time's sailing vessel.
