Il Riposo di Venere
Il Riposo di Venere
Oil on canvas, 1972/73 75cm x 60cm (30" x 24")

Artist's Interpretation:

"Venere" (Venus), the goddess of love, sprung from the foam of the sea, stole the hearts of the mortals (Anchises, a Trojan prince...) and the immortals (Ares, the God of War...) and spread joy and grief everywhere. Her lovers are embedded in the mountains that surround the bay where "Venere" came to rest. She will be feeding (spoon) young hearts the promise of everlasting happiness, a game of emotions (ace of hearts) played on the landscape of the soul. When the conscious mind (the birds) will seize reality, all lovers, no longer young, will have experienced the bliss of ecstasy and the misery of despair. "Venere" mends the broken hearts with the last transparent thread of hope (Pandora's box).
