Metaphysical Resurrection
Metaphysical Resurrection
Oil on canvas, 1977/78 120cm x 150cm (48" x 60")

Artist's Interpretation:

"Resurrection" thrusts the faith of yesterday into the sunset of tomorrow by provoking religious beliefs and asserting human frailties.

Christ is identified with the cross, the cross with the tree, the tree with life, life with death and death with eternity. It is in the eternal catharsis of renovation that mankind finds its purpose in living and its justification in dying. The nails of the crucifixion are now the columns of the Church, the roots its dome, bread and wine its essence and the stone its reality. This is a reality built on the ruins of paganism, the vacuity of yesterday and the promise of tomorrow. (Tomorrow is today's new Renaissance; no longer we explore the earth (Cabot) or investigate the body (Da Vinci), we search the universe (Armstrong), we explore the mind (Freud)....)
