The Return of Athena
The Return of Athena
Oil on canvas, 1982/83 40cm x 50cm (16" x 20")

Artist's Interpretation:

Sprang from the brow of Zeus, the god of the sky, "Athena" was the goddess of wisdom and protectress of rulers and heroes. With this painting I wanted to acknowledge and, at the same time, pay tribute to the intelligent modern woman who has joined man in his efforts to save and preserve civilization for the sake of future generations. The regurgitating clouds remind us of her birth while the mountain, with its mysterious openings, stylized bird and horse (the fall of Troy), receding into space to the shape of a death mask, retraces the myth of yesterday and reshapes the hope of tomorrow. In the game of emotions (checkered marmoreal carpet) between life (running man) and death (stone-skull in the left foreground and death-mask mountain in the distance), Time (column) will recreate the legend of the warrior virgin who fought her battles with the engaging grace of a beautiful and seductive woman (rose with stem and thorns).
