The Return of Pegasus
The Return of Pegasus
Oil on canvas, 1992 100cm x 75cm (40" x 30")

Artist's Interpretation:

Pegasus was the winged horse of the Muses that eventually ascended to the heavens to become the constellation of the same name. (The legend also tells us that Pegasus found shelter in the heavenly stalls of Olympus becoming Zeus' favourite horse).

"The Return" gives permanence to the impermanent (the passing of the seasons as a recurring metamorphosis); it is a celebration of the senses through Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall; it exalts the principle of rebirth (butterfly) and the tragedy of decay (child-stone, stone-skull), it heightens the poetry of movement (running figures, and fleeting clouds) and the stimulating prose of stillness (sculpted mountains).

It is a celebration of life within the framework of mythology, it is the return to the world of fantasy, it is the apocalyptic promise of immortality to the merchants of ideality (cypress).
